Is it worth it to hire a lawyer in Nova Scotia to help me with my debt collection issue?

Find out your options
One of the most common things I hear from people who are owed money in Nova Scotia is "I don't even know where to start." As a litigation lawyer, if I'm asked that question, my answer is "Find out what your options are."
First Step: Issue Review Consult
At Highlander Law Group, we offer the “Issue Review Consult”. It's a phone consultation where the client to explains what's going on with their specific situation and the lawyer then give practical advice for moving forward. The client gets to ask questions and the lawyer will do their best to answer them with the information on hand at the time.
Understand how the law in Nova Scotia applies to your situation
The main goal of the consultation is to help the client understand what the relevant law is and how it applies to their specific situation. It is difficult to figure out whether you have a leg to stand on or not without talking to a Nova Scotia lawyer because so much of the information available online is American, from another province, or posted from an unreliable source. When you speak to one of our lawyers during the consultation, you will get advice specific to your situation.
Will I have to hire the lawyer after the consultation?
A big part of this conversation is helping the client figure out what steps they could take on their own and what steps, if any, would be beneficial to hire a lawyer to assist with.
A lot of the time the client is able to get enough information from the lawyer during the consultation that they don't actually need to hire the lawyer. For example, in Nova Scotia, a lot of debt collection issues can be addressed in small claims court because the limit is $25,000. To learn more about how to navigate small claims court check out some of our blogs on the topic.
How much does will it cost to hire the lawyer?
It's usually pretty difficult to give an accurate estimate of how much it will cost in legal fees to resolve a situation because so much depends on how the other side responds, however, part of the consultation is to discuss how pricing works and approximately how much it will cost to navigate the situation.
As Highlander Law Group, we don't believe in surprise bills. We try our very best to estimate how much it will cost to move to the next step. We take that amount as a retainer up front and pay ourselves as we do the work. As we get towards the end of the first step, we estimate how much it will take to move to the next step and repeat the process. That way, the client gets to stay in control of their legal bill. Sometimes clients will press pause for a few months to ensure they are in a financial position to cover their legal fees. You are never forced to keep going.
You can call us at (902) 826-3070 or email us at info@highlanderlaw.ca to set up a meeting with one of our lawyers at our Tantallon law firm. You can also schedule a no commitment Issue Review Consult for $250+HST where you have the opportunity to explain your situation to a lawyer and get basic advice before deciding whether or not you'd like to retain us.
