At an Family Matter Consult (FMC) you’ll have an opportunity to talk with a lawyer and fully explain your situation.  The lawyer will then give you their opinion on what your options are, including their best guess on possible outcomes and costs.  You then decide if and how you’d like to proceed. Often after an FMC people are armed with enough information to take the first steps themselves.

It is stressful when a relationship breaks down (or is on the verge of breaking down) - with or without children.  It’s common to not be sure what your rights are or to not know what steps you should take to protect yourself.  Some people think they might need a lawyer, but aren’t even sure how a lawyer could help or how much it will cost.  They are nervous to even contact a law firm because they don’t know what questions to ask.

We created the FMC for exactly this reason.  We want you to know you are welcome to call our office, have a chance to get to know the lawyer who will be handling your file, get some basic advice, including a written summary of what was discussed, for a fixed fee ($500 + tax) and then if you wish, walk away without any further obligation.

Please note, other than in exceptional circumstances, FMCs are conducted via phone. Payment is taken in advance to hold the appointment. “No shows“ and appointments canceled with less than 24 hours notice are charged the full amount. All appointment times are AST (Nova Scotia time).
